Deanna Mears

Musical Life:

I love music and the piano has been a major part of my life since I started lessons at age 4. I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from Willamette University. I am a trained Suzuki teacher and I have more than 20 years of teaching experience.

Music has always been a part of my “life movie.” It’s been therapy as I worked out big emotions. Through it I’ve grieved loss and celebrated joy. It wasn’t until COVID-19 hit that I fully realized what music has really meant to me. As everything around us shut down and we became more isolated, music came to the rescue. Piano lessons were able to continue…we just had to move online. I had so many families tell me how much it meant to them that they still had piano lessons to look forward to. I also began sharing my own performances on Facebook. It was a way to connect with others in a meaningful way. It gave me a reason to practice and I spent a lot of time considering what was most important in this human experience we all share. I look forward to sharing these kinds of experiences with more people as we learn together through the new “channels” platform.

Personal Life:

Available March 2021

Outside of piano, I have a family: my husband Spencer, and two teenage sons Kenny and Ethan. We live in Utah and love to explore the beautiful area we live in. Some of my favorite things to do include:

We also have pets! I have a feisty dog named Aera. We have four fun chickens that run wild in our backyard. And we have fish that live in a little pond we built in our yard.

I started taking piano lessons when I was 4 years old and continued until I went off to college. Fun fact: Miss Deanna was actually my teacher! So we will have the same teacher, isn’t that fun? I started lessons doing the Suzuki method and as I got older Miss Deanna started incorporating other songs that she thought I would enjoy. I was definitely not an easy student and I gave her a run for her money, but she stuck with me and I am so grateful!
Music has been a big part of my life. I’m constantly listening to music or singing a song in my head. Playing piano is very relaxing for me. It allows me to step away from reality and take some “me” time. I believe that learning piano as a child helped this love of music grow.
I recently graduated from the business school at Brigham Young University with a degree in Experience Design and Management. This major is all about creating experiences that are meaningful. I’m excited to use the techniques from my major and incorporate them into this course.
In my free time my husband and I love to play sports, especially soccer, racquetball, and spikeball. I also enjoy painting in my free time as well.
I’m looking forward to helping all the piano students gain some awesome piano skills for themselves!
